Naturalfree: a revolutionary mobile charger- A Science Hardware Development Project
Smartphones are brilliant inventions. They have become inseparable from our lives. There are many problems associated with the limited energy capacity of the devises.
To cope with the burden of carrying along transformers, connecting wires and cumbersome power banks, this proposal describes a revolutionary mobile charger. Users can obtain electricity readily from sustainable sources, and have no more need to worry about locations of sockets or the charge up of power bank in advance. Energy can be generated automatically or manually.
Naturalfree is made of polycarbonate, which is light-weighted and durable. It consists of a solar panel with touch screen, an electromotive converter and a Li-polymer battery of small capacity. As a key chain, Naturalfree has also a LED flashlight to provide us with the illumination function. Unlike any power bank, Naturalfree is an accessory to our phone. It has an accessory hole that can be hung with phone. It also has a handle which is attached to the main body by plastic ribbon and can be twisted either in to a straight stick or a rotator handle.
Features (I): Multilayer solar cell
One important feature of Naturalfree is the solar cell on the front panel. Multilayer Solar Cell (MSC) is proved to have a high conversion efficiency (Star Solar, 2013). The use of the multi-stacked solar cell enables Naturalfree to utilize the whole solar spectrum for energy production. Each sub-cell can be particularly effective in a certain range of wavelengths of sunlight. As been tested by Institute for Solar Energy Systems, the maximum conversion efficiency of monocrystalline silicon cells is 29%, while MSC’s efficiency achieved 41.1% (Star Solar, 2013).Wherever there is a light source, classrooms, offices or in the wild, our phones can be charged. This is more convenient than using a transformation by which a socket nearby is essential for charging.
Features (II): Manual electromotive converter
Energy can also be generated in a manual and more powerful way. By using the electromotive converter, the phone can be powered up mechanically. To charge the phone, just insert the handle into the adapter and agitate it. The flywheel inside rotates and turns the generator (Wikipedia, 2013). Electricity is generated by magnetic induction. In this way, even one have forgotten to charge up the power bank, he or she can still recharge the phone. It is especially useful on the beach or in forest where electricity supply is impossible. Another benefit is that it can improve our habit and make our idle time meaningful. Users can generate power in their free time and use the stored power when needed.
