Printed material Design and Production for hackUST

As the Media Manager of hackUST, I took the leading role to design and order all the printed promotion materials for the pre-launch and main event promotion of hackUST, the first ever university-held Hackathon event in Hong Kong. Hackathon has become one of the attendees in the final round of the 25 project of HKUST because to its success. The results attained from the promotion were undeniable.

Stickers

A sticker is extremely useful for promotion and gets people's awareness due to its handy and favorable nature. People like to share and stick it around. They are spread across different venues. They were also distributed to all participants. The price was $500 for 500 pieces.

Flyers

Flyers are posted on notice boards around the campas and focused classrooms. They provide more information for the event. There were restraints on the design as a significant proportion of the small printing area was to be used to showcase all the logos of sponsors and collaborating parties/organizations.

Roller Banner

Roller Banner is portable and is the most efficient way of displaying event information. They were shown during pre-launch workshops and seminars and on the event day. The price is around HK$200 per one.

A large cheque plate was also printed for the prize presentation. The special coating was used on the cheque for whiteboard markers to write the name of the winning team and the award.

Foam boards

Foam boards are easy to carry around. Participants like to hold them for photo takings. They were used to presented the group numbers with different combination of number plates.

Clothing

I also designed the tee for all the participants and team jacket for all the committee members. As the events lasted overnight, the participant could have a change to new cloth after an overnight hacking.

Challenges

Just like any other hardware development, printed design is not malleable, and that means the change of even a slight design require the whole printed material to be ordered and manufactured again. The time lapse may cause troublesome in printing the new material, and we want to minimize the expense.

In our case, as the response for giving sponsorship was overwhelming, we received serval confirmation a few days before the main event.

There were two ways to update the banner:

For Roller banner:
It costs$63to make make a poster to paste on the lower part of roller banner,
Make a sticker (80cm *100cm) to stick on:$89
Make a new one :$140

For Big banner( extra change for the width over 4 ft, so separate in two to replace)
Sticker to replace (8ft*1.5ft =4ft*1.5ft *2) :$120
Poster to replace $84
Make a new one:$192
